Marisa loses her parents in a car accident as well as her own life. Only she doesn't realize that she's special until she moves to a small town in South Dakota and meets the handsome Arromanovokzja brothers: Alessander, Demetri, and Ra'vin. Who are these mysterious Russian brothers? At times childlike in its wonder, at other times brutal and savage, the book follows Marisa, the fledgling, not-yet-turned vampire and her struggle to find a place in this world and to leave the loneliness of her existence behind.
The author has a good ear for storytelling. The narrative is compelling and fun to follow--I pretty much read the book in one sitting. There are moments when the action gets confusing and there are editing issues, but those things didn't impede my enjoyment of the story. The author kept me turning pages wanting to know what happened.
People who enjoyed reading Twilight will like this book. People who enjoy vampires, who enjoy watching the push and pull of relationships will enjoy it as well.
My favorite part about the book was the obvious joy the author felt while writing this story. I liked how well loved her characters are, (even when she puts them in peril and yes, they are often in peril.)
The ending was satisfying, yet enough of a teaser to make me sure to watch for the next one in the series.
Thank you for the great story!

This book was riveting but at times confusing. Everything was moving in a dream like state but not a lot of explanations were given. At the end, I was left with many unanswered questions.
Imagination gone wild! This book is for someone who has an imagination for the undead! When Marisa starts a new school, when she meets a very strange trio her life takes on a drastic change, where Vampires aren't just blood suckers, and Marisa finds something new about herself? I found some grammar issues but I still give this book a 5.
When I started ready this book, I though, here we go again. Now I am hooked on what will happen to these characters. I really find that when I get one spare minute that I open the book and read. I do like it and it has kept my interest. There are many new vampire items in here that are fresh. I'm sure that if it came out in audio, I would re-listen in my car on my way to meetings.
I'm not a huge vampire fan, but I have to say, I was very pleasantly surprised by this book. I've heard it was written as a reaction to Twilight, and it's definitely that.
Marisa blows Bella out of the water. Her character arc is great -- from shy, lonely teenager to bad-ass vamp. Though the text suffers a bit from the need for a line editor, Ms. Thao's style is hypnotic and graceful. Instead of a simple romance, The Turning explores the theme of love in all its forms.
Anyone who loves vampires and was annoyed by Twilight had better give this a shot. Well worth the read.
Some sexual content and plenty of violence.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Marisa is 17 when her parents are killed in a car accident.
She was with them at the time and she died too.
And then she was reborn.
As a fledgling vampire.
'The Turning' is the first in a series of books featuring Marisa James and the trio of vampire brothers who bring her into their 'family' following the death of her parents. The story is interesting on many levels Marisa is an intriguing heroine combining all the angst of a teenage girl with the pettiness that all young men and women bring to the table. She is also fiercely loyal and possessed of hidden strengths. Her brothers are also well thought out characters who, older than she is - in some cases hundreds of years older than she is - have a certain aura of wary maturity about them.
In addition, the plot holds together well It's a story of three men and one young woman learning how to be a family while facing adversaries that threaten to not only destroy the bonds that are being forged between them but also kill Marisa - permanently. How she and they cope with the dangers they face makes for good reading.
Thao writes well - her description of the day when Marisa fully turns into a vampire is an excellent piece of narrative, for example. However, there are times when her sentence structures are awkward and there are other times in the book when I had to re-read certain passages to make sure I didn't lose track of the story. In short She crammed a lot of extraneous information into some - not all - chapters. That information wasn't strictly necessary to the story, at least from my point of view, and could have been left out without harming the narrative.
My other criticism More than a hundred typographical errors in 'The Turning.' My advice to her would be to go back and do a re-edit to correct them because they slow the reader down and that detracts from what is, I think, a really good start to a series of books featuring Marisa and her 'brothers.'
