I've been a fan of the Slayers anime for years and years and when I heard that Tokyopop was finally going to bring the novels that inspired the anime to the US, I couldn't wait to get out there and grab it. And thankfully it was everything I was hoping for. Tokyopop has done an excellent job of translating the novel while still preserving the unique brand of humor and action that makes Slayers so interesting in the first place. At less than 200 pages, the book isn't long, but it's relatively self-contained so you're not breathlessly swearing about an evil cliffhanger or anything. The novel retains the original illustrations that the Japanese version had and, while not necessary, they're nice to have.Fans of the show will probably love the novel, it covers the first part of the first season of the anime very closely (or vice versa, as the case may be). But non-fans should find a lot to enjoy about it as well. It's well written and is a very fast read (I read it in just over an hour) and it's very entertaining, with lots of action and humor. The only bad part about the novel is that it's so very short and you want to read more right away.

I bought this for my son per request, and he enjoyed it. We will probably purchase more books in this series. Thanks.
I like this.
I love this book, and the series. I'm a bit bias because I love the anime as well. However, the book is well made, interesting, and funny. The author also silently breaks the forth wall. You can never be certain if Lina is directly talking to the reader, but it feels like it fairly often. If you like fantasy with comic relief, this might be a good book for you.
At last, after years of waiting, the story of the "Slayers" in its original rendition is here! Charming and funny, anyone who loved the series will enjoy reading this. Its gives the reader more information into the magical background of the series, as well as the characters, finally giving a taste of the author's original portrayal of them. A must for any "Slayers" fan.
WARNING THIS IS A SPOILER IF YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN THE ANIME OR KNOW THE PLOT TO THE STORY.
This novel is based on the first season of Slayers where Lina, Gourry, and Zelgadis face off against Rezo and Shabranigdo. It is very well written in a style I have never seen before. The narrator is Lina but it goes far beyond that. We are not only in the mind of Lina, but she is actually telling the story, as if we were sitting down while she talks about the whole story. You have to read it to know what I'm talking about but it really is a fascinating look at the story.
The novel is almost exactly as the show with a few risky details that may have been censored for the show. There are a lot more facts that have gone unnoticed in the show that fans will find interesting to learn. (Lina is the daughter of a merchant?!)
If your a fan of the series, take a look at this book. It's a great read and a look into the psyche of the main star. If your not a fan of the show, read this book anyways. It is a good introduction to one of the best anime out there.
I recall reading the second book years ago, It might be nostalgia but I recall that book being better than this one. Not to say that it's bad, it follows a good 80% of the Anime series.
Exposition is funny. The author does not bore you to death by explaining the circumstances of the story or the protagonist.
The writing style is GREAT! The way the story is communicated is just the way I like it. It's in first person, and the main character does not hide anything. It's a natural/informal dialogue.
I don't read fiction, but this was worth my time.
