I have never been one to highlight while reading fiction, but my copy of Michelle Lynn Brown's book, Miracles in Disguise, probably has more highlights and notes than any of my non-fiction books.
Kristina has had a rough life, but she is finally free to live the life she wants. And she knows what she doesn't want. She doesn't want to be under the thumb of another man. Nathan is drawn to the new English teacher, but he knows she is hiding something. What he doesn't understand is why she won't trust him. Brown has crafted a beautiful story of letting go of your past and surrendering control to God.
My favorite part of this book was how it blended Christ and life. It wasn't preachy, but it ministered to my soul. Normally when authors try to fit sermons and prayers into their books they are forced and I tend to skim because they don't add to the story. Yet every word Brown wrote was relevant to the story and was woven in gracefully. The characters hunger for the Word was genuine and I devoured it right along with them.
Quick note Despite my love for this book, at the very end of the story, there was one question that I was dying to know the answer to that was never explained. It wasn't a huge piece of the story, more of just a niggling, but still, I hate loose ends (pet-peeve).
Really enjoyed this wonderful book. It covers everything from being mistreated as a child, to life as an adult can actually be miserable if you continue to concentrate on all that has happened to you. You have a way out of all the fear and hate and misery. If you accept God into your heart. Everything will change and you will experience freedom for the first time in your life. Peace and joy will fill your heart. Guilt will disappear and God will fill your heart with love. Do you want to be free? READ this book, It covers all you need to know. Take your time and examine your heart. Accepting God is you only answer. Think about it!
In the “about the author” section of the book, the author says that she hopes to minister to people through her stories. Well, she achieved that goal with me! I’ve had a difficult time the past few months, and I needed someone to give me a kick in the pants about trusting in God’s greatness. The characters’ prayers to and dialogue about God are sometimes a little overdone, but who am I to complain? I needed a little preaching! The only other negative is that a few dialogue-related punctuation symbols (e.g., having periods where there should be commas) need editing, but they are so minor and infrequent enough as to not incite me to dock the author a star for it. (And I am picky about the technical side of writing.)
All that aside, you can’t help falling in love with the hero yourself, and become the heroine’s biggest cheerleader. This sweet, clean romance is hard to put down, but easy to enjoy, and makes you want to write a review to recommend it to others. ;)
1st Book of the series
After being released from an abusive marriage, Kristina Talbot has left her home in New York and accepted a position as a teacher in Hamilton, New Mexico. She loves teaching and is looking forward to working with children again. When her car breaks down within 20 miles of her destination she is upset and frustrated, especially when her cell phone doesn't work in the area. When a stranger pulls up behind her in a truck and offers help, all the stories of abduction and attacks, cause her to not trust him. When he calls for a tow truck for he and identifies himself, she finally allows him to give her a ride to her destination.
Things don't stop there, Kristina finds out that the man who helped her is Nathan McKinley, local worship leader at a church and a coach at the high school where she will be working. Their relationship moves forward slowly, thrown together by circumstances and Nathan's liking for her. But Kristina is done with men - never again is her position and she finally lets Nathan know that they cannot have a relationship other than friends. But there are changes coming and Kristina has to let herself understand that she's not responsible for what happened to her and she has to learn to trust.
I'm on the third book of this series and I've found it to be very good, however the topics may be off-putting for some readers. "Spoiler alert" Abuse, rape and mental abuse are the topics of all three books. The storyline shows how each of the women live through it and are helped by their relationship with God. "End of Alert."
I like them but not all at once, I have to read other books in between. However they are very good reads
