Well my favorite faery tale is Cinderella so when I found this book I had to get it. This is the second book in a series. the first book "In the Wake of the Wind" was wonderful. Now is this book we get Rafe's story. He has come to Ireland after his cousin has died leaving him an estate. He finds in horrible condition. His cousin was not a good lord and had spent all the money from the estate on his pleasures rather than on the land or its people. The have lived for quite a while under very poor conditions and they are very suspicious of the British. Rafe, frustrated with everything goes on a long ride and encounters the most beautiful woman he has ever seen, alone on an edge of a cliff, quoting poetry. This beauty is Lucy Kincaid, the daughter of the former Irish lord before Rafe's cousin took over. She has been treated like a servant/slave by her stepmother and her two step sisters since her fathers death 9 years previously. She is very wary of strangers and when he approaches she seems to jump right off the cliff. He is heartbroken to think that she has killed herself and tries to find out who she was. In his quest he pays a visit on the stepmother and somehow agrees to send them to London for the season. They all end up going, to Lucy's bewilderment, and there he unexpectantly comes across her walking in the park. She insists that he is mistaken and disappears again. He then spends the rest of the season searching for her again and again but to no avail. At the end of the season at the last ball he finds her again, she has been given one chance at happiness and gets to go to the ball, and he knows that he loves her and must be with her. She disappears again and this time he finds her again in Ireland. This is a wonderfully touching story and I liked the fact that Lucy was a very strong woman who even though she was in the worst of surroundings took things in stride and kept her pride. I also enjoyed the secondary character of Hugo, Rafe's younger brother. He gets his own book which I plan to read very soon. I really like Katherine Kinglsey's books because they are true romances.

Once Upon a Dream Katherine Kingsley 9780440220763 Books Reviews
I've read all of Katherine Kingsley's novels and lately I've been really disappointed with them. I'm not sure what it is about her stories that disappoint me, it's not her writing style, I know. In fact, the language she uses is sophisticated and her plots intricate and well thought out. It's just that I feel the same emotion which compelled her to write "no sweeter heaven" is missing. I suppose that success is hard to live up to and that previous success puts pressure on the author to live up to these higher expectations. All I know is that with "once upon a dream" I felt that the characters were not as strong as they could be. Lucy Kincaid is a beautiful woman forced to become a menial in her own household. How cliché is that? And then the handsome dashing duke spots the lovely Lucy and falls madly in love with her. How about lust? I know this is a romance novel and the characters are prone to wild fits of passionate emotions. However, I think it is a bit shallow that Raphael would fall in love with a woman he does not know based on her looks. It was after all the vision of Lucy walking near the cliffs which drove him to look for her. Anyway, I didn't mean to be so harsh on this novel, I still enjoy Katherine Kingsley's novels. I just wish that the characters would be more real like they were in "no sweeter heaven."
I absolutely love Katherine Kingsley in No Sweeter Heaven, and a few of her other earlier books. Once Upon a Dream, however, is awful! The story starts off well, but it veers off about a quarter way through. The reader is supposed to believe that Raphael Montague falls in love with Lucy Kincaid after one encounter. Ok, this is kind of believable. But then he goes to her home, and doesn't recognize her. Raphael's pursuit of Lucy beyond Ireland seems like lust and obsession, rather than love. Raphael and Lucy have little meaningful interaction until Raphael finally figures out who exactly Lucy is. By that point, Katherine Kingsley is still hung up on the notion of Irish-British hostility, which means that Lucy refuses to acknowledge that Raphael might love her and have her best interests at heart. Even when Lucy moves back into her ancestral home and acts as Raphael's housekeeper, her interactions with Raphael are unpleasant and hostile. I'd like to know where the romance is in this story. Unfortunately, Katherine Kingsley's talent as a writer has deteriorated over the past few years.
Great story!
Ah, this book is marvelous. Yes, it's another Cinderella story... and much much more!
Despite the fact that everyone have already read/heard about the Cinderella story, I still suggest you take time in reading this book as it is worth it... That is if you are the kind of person to let your imaginations run free. I was first hesistant myself but I am glad I bought it and read it. Katherine Kingsley added more twist into this famous story, which makes it more appealing, more exciting. The characters she portrayed are more realistic and well formed. She took time in describing the characters to its full impact. Not just a simple prince and princess in love! There is more into each characters - even the secondary ones. The romance and love story.... also well designed. The whole plot have more spices, more adventurous. I don't know what else to say about this book without foretelling and ruining it to those who haven't read it yet. I can assure you that there will be many amusing & unexpected scenes compared to the simple cinderella story we once heard and read. This book was beautifully writtened, it left me day dreaming all day after I read it. Embarassing but true! Enjoy!
A new author to treasure for enjoyable fairytale reading without any nightmares.
